MONPTELIER, Vt. (AP) — The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department is promoting hunting by young people with the Governor's Youth Turkey Hunt this spring.

Kids who sign up will attend a luncheon on April 13 and discuss Vermont's hunting tradition, learn what a turkey call sounds like and how to handle a turkey fan and beard. The following weekend, they will participate in a guided turkey hunt.

National Wild Turkey Federation Vermont chapter president Don Isabelle says young hunters have been declining but they hope to reverse the trend.

Licensed hunters under the age of 16 are encouraged to apply. Applications are due April 1 and available on the Fish and Wildlife Department website.

The event is sponsored by the National Wild Turkey Federation.
