Well-known recurve shooter Fred Eichler has taken a lot of wild turkeys with his recurve, but this is his first one with a longbow. The specific gear he’s using includes a Bear Archery Au Sable longbow, Easton Legacy shaft and Wasp CBW (Cuts Both Ways) fixed-blade broadhead.
(FYI: Fred Eichler is the first archer to take all 29 North American big game animals with a recurve and complete the Super Slam.)
In the 4.5-minute YouTube video below, Eichler is pursuing high-country Merriam's turkeys — at nearly 8,000 feet in Colorado. As you’ll see, he has seven jakes check out his decoy setup.
As for other gear used on this hunt: Eichler is hiding in a Cabela’s pop-up blind, which allows him to draw his longbow without alerting the nearby birds. A strutter decoy from Montana Decoy Company helped lure in the jakes from a distance, and a taxidermy hen turkey holds their attention long enough for a shot.
Good shooting, Fred!
