Collage Roland Martin shorefishing

When it comes to the Mount Rushmore of bass anglers, there’s no question that Roland Martin is on it. He won the B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year title a record nine times!

Roland will turn 85 years old in March of 2025, and while he no longer competes in tournaments, he is still guiding bass anglers in southern Florida. Click here to learn about his current schedule and list of waters.

I remember watching his popular TV show “Fishing With Roland Martin” in the early 1980s, and I always smiled when at the end of the 30-minute program he’d hook into a big largemouth and yell, “Whoa, son!”

As you’ll see in the YouTube video below, Roland hasn’t lost his passion for catching bass. Roland has nearly 200k subscribers to his YouTube channel, and this video is the most-watched, surpassing the 2.5M mark.

In the 19-minute video, Roland provides tips on catching bass from the shoreline. As always, his information is outstanding. Viewing tip: If you don’t have time to watch the entire video, fast-forward to the 17:13 mark to see him make the cast before hooking the big fish on a hollow-bodied frog.

“Son, that is what it’s all about! That’s bank fishin’!”

“Whoa, son! That’s a biggun!”

Roland’s joy upon catching and releasing that bass is 100 percent authentic. I hope and pray that I have his enthusiasm (and decent health) to pursue bass when I’m 85.
