When it comes to talking about the history of tournament bass fishing, few can match the legend Roland Martin, winner of the B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year title a record nine times.
In a recent Facebook post, he wrote: “Been seeing some news stories lately about folks cheating in bass tournaments. Ray Scott, founder of B.A.S.S., found a great way to find and deal with cheaters. Ray also made sure not to publicize any of these stories. Here are some stories I remember where B.A.S.S. officials caught someone cheating.”
Enjoy this look back at high-level tournament bass fishing in the 1970s and ‘80s — and the true stories of two competitors who tried to cheat with bass caught before the events even began.
In the 18-minute YouTube video, Roland also details the time when he won a B.A.S.S. tournament — and big bass for the day — with a giant fish caught from a brush pile that might have been too close to a gas pump.
