September is a month of transition in a largemouth bass’ world. The consistency of summer is ending. The nights are getting cooler — as well as some of the days, especially later in the month. Some of the bass will still be in their deep summer haunts and some will be shallow.
As explained in the 1-minute YouTube video below, one great method for finding and catching bass during this transition period is using a topwater lure. It works especially well during the first couple hours of the day when the shallows on the eastern side of the lake is covered in shade.
The key is covering water with a topwater lure that moves relatively quickly, such as a Heddon Zara Spook, Booyah Boss Pop, Rebel Pop-R or even a buzzbait. Tip: Catching bass on the surface is thrilling and it’s easy to set the hook too fast, resulting in misses. Give a bass at least one second (count if you must!) to take the lure under the surface before sweeping back your rod and your hooking percentage will greatly increase.
