MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — Vermont and seven other states are holding spring snow goose hunting season to help cut down on the growing population that officials say is destroying habitat.
Vermont's season runs from March 11 to April 24. Officials say the breeding population of snow geese has grown from about 50,000 birds in the mid-1960s to 900,000 today that has resulted in damage to farm crops and marsh vegetation from Quebec to North Carolina.
In Vermont, the season is statewide and the daily bag limit is 15 geese. A spring snow goose harvest permit is required and available for free on the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department's web site or by called the Essex Junction office at 802-878-1564.
