Many anglers who are experienced with filleting walleyes, perch, panfish and other species are sometimes intimidated by cleaning catfish. They’ve heard stories about having to peel a catfish skin with a pliers, etc.

In the 1-minute Facebook video below, the angler demonstrates how quick and easy it can be. With an electric fillet knife and a little knowledge of catfish anatomy, he makes quick work of a channel catfish. Notice how the catfish filleting process is a bit different behind the gills than it is with one of the species I mentioned previously. Catfish have a bony structure behind the gills (closer to the belly) and you simply have to work your knife around it. Not a big deal.

Channel catfish of the size shown in this video are perfect table fare. Watch and learn.

P.S. The angler doesn’t talk in this video, but turning up the volume lets you hear the electric fillet knife doing its job.
