Late season waterfowl safety

When it comes to providing solid waterfowl hunting advice, I rely on two sources, Ducks Unlimited and Delta Waterfowl. Both organizations were founded with conservation in mind, and because their membership is made up of diehard waterfowl hunters, each one also provides outstanding how-to hunting information.

An article suggestion from Ducks Unlimited recently appeared on my Facebook Feed titled “Stay Safe Out There!” The subhead explained more: “When late-season weather turns dangerous, pay heed to this life-saving advice.”

I checked it out and thought it was worth highlighting on this site. I encourage you to click here to read it. These are the seven tips explained in detail.

  1. Communicate your plan
  2. Gun safety
  3. Be prepared
  4. Dress in layers
  5. Head, hands and toes
  6. Know the water
  7. Know your limits

One tip I’d add that wasn’t discussed in the article is hunt with a buddy. That way you have someone nearby who can assist in case of an emergency. However, not even a buddy can save you if you push the limits too far.

I’m reminded of a news story I read in mid-November 2025 about a 30-year-old Minnesota man who drowned in North Dakota while saving his dog, which became stuck on a sheet of ice when trying to retrieve a hit duck. The hunter’s friend attempted to save the man, and he almost did, but the man ultimately let go of the rescuer’s hand and went under the water.

If you’re still out there pursuing late-season ducks or geese, especially on water, be extremely careful!
