Girl Attacked, Injured by Cougar

The cougar that attacked a 9-year-old girl in Washington state was located and killed.

In May, 2022, a girl attending a summer camp in Washington state survived an attack from a young, male cougar but was treated for serious injuries. Lily A. Kryzhanivskyy was treated in the intensive care unit but released after two days in stable condition. Her mother told WDFW officials that her daughter was “very brave and tough.” Kryzhanivskyy was playing with friends in the woods near camp buildings when the cougar attacked. The other children were not harmed physically. “We are extremely thankful for this little girl’s resiliency, and we’re impressed with her spunk, in the face of this unfortunate encounter,” said Capt. Mike Sprecher of the WDFW. “It happened fast. We are thankful the adults at the camp responded so quickly.” The cougar was located and killed. Tests showed it did not have rabies. Washington state has had only two fatal attacks from cougars and 19 others resulting in injuries during the past 100 years.
