Coyote in Prison

Scattered Thoughts: Time Served

For several years, I have been volunteering for a prison ministry in the inner city of Chicago. Once a week, I drive a large van around to different facilities, picking up people and taking them to our evening church service. One of the facilities had a group of men who knew I was an avid coyote hunter, and when I showed them pictures from my latest hunt they asked me where I had been. The small town was in southern Illinois, and honestly, before this hunt, I didn't know of its existence. “You probably have never heard of it.” I said dismissively. They weren’t satisfied with this response. Finally, I relented, “Lawrenceville.”Laughter filled the van, and a voice from the rear of the vehicle said, “I did seven years in Lawrenceville.” Come to find out the town has a penitentiary.I looked over at my front seat passenger, Jeff, who said, “We’ve all been to Lawrenceville, but you were the only one coyote hunting.”
