CLARE, Mich. (AP) — A hunter who said he was attacked by a black bear in Michigan's Clare County has scratches on a forearm but no serious injuries and believes the animal was just being nosy.
It “wasn't a vicious attack,'' Ron Davis told WPBN-TV.
“I think he was just more curious of what I was,'' Davis said. “Didn't really know what I was sitting there. Thought he'd come over and investigate. ... Didn't tear me up. Didn't bite me.''
Davis was hunting for porcupine in Greenwood Township last Thursday when the bear approached from behind and knocked him to the ground.
He said he stabbed the bear with a knife and the animal “took off running.''
A bear trap baited with bacon has been set in the area, 100 miles north of Lansing, the Department of Natural Resources said.
Samples from Davis' knife are being tested for bear DNA, a process that could take two weeks, DNR spokesman Ed Golder said.
“We still don't know whether we have a usable sample or not. That has to be determined first,'' Golder said.
Michigan has as many as 10,000 black bears, with 90 percent of them in the Upper Peninsula.
