A 10-year-old boy attacked by a grizzly bear in Yellowstone National Park is recovering from his injuries, which were not life-threatening.

The boy and his family, who are from Washington, were hiking in the national park in late August when the bear charged from the brush along the trail. The boy was transported to Big Sky Medical Center in Bozeman, Montana, to be treated for wounds to his wrist, back and buttocks.

Officials say the family was charged by a grizzly bear sow that likely had cubs with it and was surprised by the hikers. They were near the Divide and Spring Creek trails, which were temporarily closed

“This incident could have been more serious," said Yellowstone National Park Deputy Superintendent Pat Kenney. "We applaud the family for traveling in a group, carrying bear spry, and knowing how to effectively use it during their emergency. We wish their son a full recovery from his injuries.”

The boy's parents used bear spray about 5 feet from the grizzly, which had knocked down the boy when it ran from the charge.
