Walleyes Rainy River

I’ve written about this crazy annual Minnesota boat launch scene before for Grand View Outdoors, but I simply had to share a recent Facebook video because it still amazes me. (Click here to read my story from April 2023 where I explained the boat launch details regarding who/what/why/where.)

This year, opening day for walleyes throughout Minnesota’s inland waters is May 10 (12 a.m. in the morning), but MANY anglers who can’t wait that long flock to the Minnesota/Ontario border to fish the famed Rainy River. FYI: The walleye season (catch and release only) was open on this river from March 1 to April 14, 2025.

Check out the April 10, 2025, Facebook video below (1:43 in length) from Rainy Lake Guiding. These trucks with boat trailers are parked alongside roads near Birchdale Landing in Nelson Park. Note: In my previous article, I discussed how walleye anglers can get from their parked trucks back to the river without walking the long distance.

P.S. Click “enter fullscreen” and turn up the volume for best viewing. And click on the link above to Rainy Lake Guiding to see what it’s like on the river. Not only do their clients catch numerous walleyes, but some big ones, too!
