Let’s face it: It takes some serious dedication (and often some serious money up front) to apply year after year for coveted big game tags in the West. If the whole preference point system just isn’t your cup of Joe, then perhaps you can win Montana’s big game lottery.

Montana SuperTag Lottery

Here’s the skinny: Hunters can win Montana’s SuperTag Lottery by purchasing one or more $5 SuperTag chances for the fall 2018 hunting season. The following eight SuperTag hunt licenses are offered: moose, bighorn sheep, mountain goat, elk, deer, antelope, mountain lion and bison. One SuperTag will be drawn for each species.

And here’s the best part: Winners can hunt any district open to the species for which they won a tag. In other words, with a bit of research completed, you can hike into Montana’s legendary trophy districts and not have to wait many years to finally draw.

How to Play

SuperTags are available at all Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) offices, license providers, or online at fwp.mt.gov. SuperTags can be purchased using FWP's online licensing service.

Important note: A 2018 conservation license is needed to purchase SuperTag chances; the annual conservation license price is $8 for residents, and $10 for nonresidents.

The deadline to purchase SuperTags chances is June 28, 2018. You can buy an unlimited number of chances, and you’ll receive a receipt verifying your purchase that lists your lottery numbers. SuperTag drawings are held in mid-July each year.

Proceeds from SuperTag sales go to enhance hunting access and boost FWP enforcement efforts.

FYI to Bowhunters Who Regularly Apply for Montana Licenses

If you win a SuperTag, and also draw a license or permit through FWP’s special permit license drawings, you’ll be required to surrender that license or permit before receiving the SuperTag. However, FWP will refund the license fee associated with the special permit or license and reinstate any bonus points. Montana’s 7-year wait for individuals who draw a moose, sheep or goat license through Montana’s special permit license drawings will not be imposed on SuperTag winners.
