BUTTE, Mont. (AP) — A man was cited for hunting without landowner permission after a canoe carrying the man, a boy and a deer carcass got stuck in an ice jam in the headwaters of the Jefferson River.
Madison County Undersheriff Roger Thompson tells The Montana Standard that the 45-year-old man called for assistance Sunday after he and a 16-year-old boy got stuck in the partially frozen waterway.
Crews were able to retrieve the boat and its occupants by towing the canoe with a rope from the shoreline. No one was injured.
Thompson says game wardens determined the buck whitetail deer in the canoe had been shot on private property without the owner's permission. The man was cited. His name was not released.
