It was a chilly morning in central North Carolina on November 10th, 2012, also opening day of firearms season for deer. I’d actually planned for a quick doe hunt near my home. It was a little before 7 a.m., and just as there was enough light squeezing through the darkness to see, a siren from an emergency vehicle sounded off a few miles away. A female howl blasted from just inside the wood line about 45 yards directly in front of me and across a small grassy field. I was caught off guard because of the closeness of the howl. I kneeled down and made a few high-pitched mouth squeals and within about a minute she trotted out to the edge of the field. At 35 yards I dropped her where she stood with a .358 Win. Silvertip. Opening day of deer season made for a nice unexpected coyote hunt!
