Elk hunt lottery deadline looms at preserve

JEMEZ SPRINGS, N.M. (AP) — Sportsmen face a deadline this week for applying for a chance to hunt elk on the 89,000-acre Valles Caldera National Preserve in northern New Mexico.

The preserve is offering 226 elk hunting permits through a computerized drawing and entries must be received by midnight on Wednesday.

The preserve near Los Alamos is considered one of the best locations for hunting trophy elk in New Mexico.

Under new lottery rules, sportsmen are limited to one ticket for each hunt code but they can enter as many of the different hunts in September, October and November as they wish.

Lottery entries cost $25 each for a mature bull or either sex hunt, and $10 for hunts of antlerless elk.
