Like many of you I assume, I spend a decent amount of time watching outdoor-related content on YouTube. And because of the algorithms on a smart TV, YouTube offers recommendations on what I might like to check out based on my previous activities.
Recently this 8.5-minute video appeared as a YouTube recommendation, and its title sucked me in immediately: “They Laughed at His ‘Toy’ Rifle. Then He Killed 11 Snipers in 4 Days.” The video appears on the channel Historic Warframes. (Yes, the images in the video were sourced via AI, but I’ve vetted the story and it’s true.)
I won’t spoil the video by discussing too much of it here. The setting is World War II, late-January 1943, and specifically the Battle of Guadalcanal (Solomon Islands); it was the first major Allied Forces land offensive against Japan during the war.
The video tells the amazing story of Lieutenant John George and his Winchester Model 70 deer hunting rifle (chambered in .30-06), which he used as a sniper rifle. Check it out!
P.S. John George wrote a book titled “Shots Fired in Anger: A Rifleman's Eye View of the Activities on the Island of Guadalcanal,” and I plan to buy it then read it this spring in the turkey blind.
