RUSH, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a man has been fatally shot by his friend's son while squirrel hunting in woods near Rochester.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says 71-year-old Vienchaleun Kettavong was hunting late Tuesday afternoon with his 58-year-old friend and the man's 22-year-old son in a thickly-forested area in the town of Rush, 10 miles south of the city.

Deputies say the younger man fired his rifle at what he believed to be a squirrel, and instead shot Kettavong. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

It took several hours before Kettavong's body could be removed from the scene because of the rugged terrain.

No charges have been filed. Police say their investigation is continuing.
