I had been contacted by a farmer friend about some coyotes coming too close to his house, and he asked me if I could come out and deal with them. When I arrived at his house, he was on the phone with the neighbors, letting them know that if they saw a guy with a rifle in the field not to worry.
There was a pause in the conversation and the farmer said, “He kinda looks like a Garden Gnome.” Standing at 5 feet, 6 inches and sporting a long white beard, it wasn’t the first time I had heard that.
A few minutes later, the farmer pointed from his porch toward the draw where the coyotes were coming from. With little cover, other than the darkness, I decided to make my stand not far from the farmer’s front yard.
After only three minutes of playing MFK’s “Rabbit Stew” on my Foxpro Fusion e-caller, a coyote ran up to within 40 yards of me. He was looking around, never noticing me, when I pulled the trigger and dropped him.
Not bad for a lawn statue.
