The 2023-2024 Federal Duck Stamp will feature a painting of three tundra swans by Minnesota artist Joe Hautman.

In team sports, fans immediately think of the New York Yankees, Chicago Bulls, New England Patriots and similar iconic franchises that dominated certain eras. In outdoor-themed art, specifically the Federal Duck Stamp Competition, the Hautman brothers — Joe, Jim and Bob — have been even more dominant.

Consider this: Minnesota artist Joe Hautman recently won the annual Federal Duck Stamp Competition for the sixth time, tying his brother Jim for the most ever. And their younger brother Bob? Well, he’s won it “only” three times. Bob took third place in the 2022 contest with his painting of an American wigeon (below). Note: Joe’s winning entry will be featured on the 2023-2024 Federal Duck Stamp.

To learn more about artist Joe Hautman, including how he decided to paint three tundra swans for the 2022 Federal Duck Stamp Competition, click here to read an outstanding article on the Mossy Oak website by Jessi Cole. Her story explains how the Hautman brothers became interested in waterfowl hunting, as well as the Federal Duck Stamp Program.

The Federal Duck Stamp Program, which is administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, is one of the most successful conservation tools ever created. Since 1934, more than $1.1 billion (with a “b”) has been raised through the program to protect habitat for birds and other wildlife. When waterfowl hunters — and any other conservation-minded individuals — purchase an annual Federal Duck Stamp ($25), almost all of the money (98 percent to be exact) goes toward buying and leasing wetland habitat on national wildlife refuges. Persons 16 and older are required to purchase the stamp to hunt migratory waterfowl.
