Here’s one I’ve never seen before. Black bears are notorious for getting their heads stuck in buckets because of their curiosity and willingness to eat just about anything, but whitetails are typically more wary and picky eaters.
That said, this young Minnesota whitetail seemingly couldn’t resist the urge to taste the salt inside a water softener bag. It makes sense; whitetails love salt licks, especially during spring and summer.
As a Minnesota resident, I can tell you we’ve had one of the windiest springs on record. I’m guessing someone’s trash can blew over, allowing its contents to scatter across the landscape, and this water softener bag ended up in a woodlot.
Thankfully this conservation officer was able to remove the bag before the deer hurt itself by blindly running into something in a panic. Kudos to the officer for knowing he needed to approach the deer quietly; I’m sure the deer’s sense of smell was greatly hindered due to the bag.
“You’re free!”
