When it comes to learning more about whitetail deer, the go-to organization (in my opinion) is the National Deer Association. This non-profit does outstanding work in the field and has an extensive library of online articles on deer science, habitat, hunting and venison. It also has 275+ YouTube videos.

In the whitetail world, spring is time for a buck to begin growing antlers and a doe to give birth to one or two — sometimes three! — fawns. With this in mind, the timing is perfect for highlighting the NDA’s recent article titled, “Fawns Use 3 Strategies To Avoid Predators. This Habitat Strategy Can Help.”

In the opening paragraph, Lindsay Thomas Jr. wrote, “A long-term study of fawn survival in south-central Minnesota is not only unique for using drones to locate fawns, it’s also giving us a new look at fawn movement patterns and home-range size. As deer habitat managers, we can take lessons from the strategies fawns use to avoid predators and survive the early weeks of life.”

The text and photos are outstanding, and there’s a 2.5-minute video at the end for you to see exactly how the whitetail study was conducted. The tips you’ll learn when it comes to habitat management could significantly aid fawn survival on your property.
