Perhaps my late father in law put it best when I asked him how many rifles he owned. “Oh, ’bout 30, I guess,” was his reply. “Well, how many of them are varmint guns?” I pressed. “Oh, ’bout 30, I guess.” While it’s true that rifles chambered in calibers ranging from Mighty Mouse rimfires to Menacing Magnums will put an end to a predator’s prowling ways, a certain amount of refinement is necessary if the end goal is a prized pelt and a trip to the local furbuyer. Even if the intention is predator population management, no one rifle/caliber/ammo combo will do it all. Gun Guru Ron Spomer says to find the perfect predator rifle for the job at hand, it’s important to first define why you’re targeting predators such as coyotes — to control numbers or harvest fur? “If it’s the former, you have a wider selection,” he said. “If it’s the latter, you must compromise somewhat to minimize fur damage. That compromise begins with caliber but continues into muzzle velocity, bullet weight and bullet construction.” The good news for fur hunters is that there is no shortage of predator-specific rifles on the market in a mind-boggling assortment of makes, models and configurations for every conceivable predator-hunting application. If you’re a casual hunter, you’ll likely get by with one or two guns for all your wet work. If you’re a dyed-in-the-wool varminteer, you probably already own a battery or rifles and have several more on your wish list. If you’re somewhere in-between, as most hunters are, you must face the realization that no one rifle is going to accommodate all types of hunting, in all types or terrain, on all types of critters. The availability of rifles to fill every conceivable predator hunting niche, along with specialized factory ammunition and accessories, are testament to a sustained interest in specialized fur guns. Here’s a shopping list to get you started.

Airguns
The popularity of airguns is undeniable — growing exponentially in recent years, sparked by technological advancements that have turned backyard plinkers into legitimate, precision hunting rifles. Their modern day roots, perhaps, lie under the Christmas tree, where wide-eyed youngsters unwrapped the Daisy Red Ryder or Crosman American Classic that would fuel an obsession that would wane very little over the years. These young riflemen — and rifle-ladies in some cases — grew up to become sportsmen and women as they graduated from airguns to small-caliber rifles for varmint and small-game hunting, and ultimately to larger-caliber rifles for big-game and predator pursuits.
And this has fueled a growing industry, with a new generation of manufacturers producing more powerful high-tech guns to meet the growing demand alongside enhancements to existing gun models. Predator Xtreme Contributor Jim Chapman says it has been a steady evolution to the big-bore rifles used for hunting these days. “For many years, there was a common design thread amongst these guns, all PCP power plants, calibers in the .30- to .50-caliber range, and mostly big, heavy, single-shot rifles. These guns were all bolt actions at first, often with two bolts, with one used to access the loading port and one to cock the gun.
“Triggers tended to be heavy,” Chapman added, “and guns often lacked an external safety mechanism, so they needed to be de-cocked when on the move. The performance was refined in these rifles, achieving higher velocity/energy output, and some [gunmakers] began offering even larger calibers such as .58, .62 and .72. These guns were throwing impressively large chunks of lead downrange with power and accuracy. The ergonomics and controls were also improving, side lever cocking replaced bolt actions in many designs, safety mechanisms became ubiquitous, and trigger quality improved substantially, but the designs were similar to their predecessors.”
Carbine and bullpup configurations also made an entry, Chapman says, as well as the use of regulators to improve consistency and shot count gained traction, and the development of multishot rifles utilizing various approaches, became available.
Whether you’re in the market for a traditional paper-puncher or a full-blown air-powered hunting rifle, these high-test models should trip your trigger.
