The owner of an unoccupied ice fishing shanty had to chase it for a few miles as it blew across Wisconsin’s Lake Winnebago.

I recently wrote about a 177-pound sturgeon that was hauled out of Wisconsin’s Lake Winnebago during the 2023 spearing season. (Click here to check out that story.) However, that monster fish wasn’t the only thing turning heads on the lake.

On February 15, strong winds caused headaches for many spearers venturing onto Lake Winnebago. One person, Jason Bellmer, captured his unique problem in this video.

As you’ll see, Bellmer’s ice fishing shanty, which is built on wooden runners for pulling it around on the ice, fell victim to a combination of strong winds and no snow cover. With few options, Bellmer jumped in a side-by-side and chased his unoccupied shanty as it blew a few miles across Lake Winnebago. He says it was moving steadily at 8 mph. Eventually, Bellmer and a friend caught up to the house and moved it to shore.
