Levi Morgan drawing high

Levi Morgan is arguably the best competitive archer of all time, and in the 8-minute YouTube video below, he shows why drawing your bow with it pointed level at the target is WRONG.

He explains why every elite pro — the top 1 percent of target archers in the world — begins his or her draw with the bow pointed well above the target, then after they reach full draw, they settle/lower both shoulders, find their anchor, and begin aiming. This "sky drawing" technique sets up the archer in the most stable platform for aiming, with minimal pin movement.

In addition to helping you shoot more accurately, drawing high to set your shoulders makes it easier to pull back the bow without fatigue or injury. As the physical weight of the bow falls toward the ground, you should push against it. This technique will help any archer draw more poundage easily.

Important note: Levi is a diehard bowhunter as well as a competitive archer, and he explains why this drawing method shouldn't be used in the woods when ambushing whitetails and other game at close range.

P.S. Although this doesn’t have anything to do with Levi’s message in the video, I do have to point out how impressed I was by Levi’s ability to hold his bow at full draw while raising and lowering it — without seemingly any effort at all. This happens a few times between the 3:20 and 3:35 marks. Sure, Levi is in crazy-good shape, but his ability to hold his bow at full-draw and make those slow and relaxed, up and down moves without a muscle quivering is astonishing to me. Guess I need to hit the gym and start shooting more arrows!
