To shoot a compound bow with accuracy and consistency, you must grip it correctly, meaning with no torque. In the 6-minute YouTube video below, legendary competitive archer and hunter Levi Morgan teaches you exactly how to “get a grip.”
He begins by showing exactly where the bow’s riser should contact your hand. If you’re a beginning archer, the chances are high that you’re doing it wrong. But this also needs to be said: Many longtime bowhunters grip a bow incorrectly, too.
Example: One of my best friends, who has been hunting with me for 40 years, grips his bow poorly (torques the bow), and sadly, he’s too stubborn to change. Thankfully, he limits his shooting range on whitetails to 20 yards, so he’s still able to kill plenty of deer without making poor hits.
As Morgan explains, the key to shooting a bow well is repeatability.
