Host of “Winchester Deadly Passion,” Melissa Bachman has traveled the world pursuing a wide variety of species. One of her favorite destinations is Alaska, and in the YouTube video clip below, she is behind the camera instead of in front of it. She’s filming her husband, Ben Bearshield, as he waits in ambush along a creek for a massive Kodiak Island brown bear.

Check out the photo above; look closely and you can see Ben at full draw, and behind him is his guide, Cole Kramer, who has a rifle ready — just in case.

Melissa records all the action from higher on the hill, and somehow Ben and Cole capture the scene, too, with a camera placed behind Ben.

The shot distance is only 4 yards! Of course, even though his target is nearly the size of a VW Beetle, shot placement is critical.

“Ben has an HHA Sports King Pin sight on his 65-pound draw Mathews bow,” Melissa said. “It’s a dial sight, but we knew this bear would be inside 20 yards, so he had it set on 20 and the bear strolled by at 4 yards. Ben said it was so close he had to pull his head up and look over the sight housing because his sight picture was just solid brown, and had to determine where he was aiming on the bear. Pretty cool!”

Author’s Note: Click here to see the full 22-minute episode of “Winchester Deadly Passion” featuring Ben and Melissa’s Kodiak Island hunt. Guide Cole Kramer explains in detail how to identify an old boar, and the importance of playing the wind. The group travels the Island’s creeks with inflatable boats, then hike to vantage points to glass for bears; the scenery is breathtaking. As you’ll see, the key are the streams, and specifically the salmon found in them. Not unlike a whitetail hunter relying on a food plot, Ben takes advantage of a brown bear’s habit of visiting the streams to search for salmon.
