I get it — early season whitetail hunting can sometimes seem more like a chore than an escape. From biting insects to uncomfortably high temperatures, September and early October bowhunting is often bumped down the priority list below fall fishing and other end-of-the-summer activities.

But the best part of the whitetail season is knocking on the door. Last weekend while hiking with my sons in South Dakota during a youth-only pheasant weekend, I spotted several fresh scrapes and too many rubs to count. The Midwest is set up for a cold weekend, and that should get many mature bucks on their feet during legal hunting hours. Sure, the acorn crop this season in many areas is off-the-charts high, but don’t let that scare you. Mature bucks don’t have to travel far to find food, but their desire to breed is starting to kick in; wait in a treestand or ground blind overlooking a traditional scraping hotspot and Mr. Big could pay you a visit.

As inspiration for you to hit it hard this weekend, I’m highlighting four magnificent whitetail bucks that have appeared on my Facebook newsfeed during the past week. Two are from Iowa, and one each from Wisconsin and Ohio. The text below each pic was taken from the FB posts.

Good luck this weekend; shoot a giant!
