Parkersburg deer hunt kills increase 100 percent

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (AP) — The number of deer killed during Parkersburg's 2013 urban archery hunt jumped 100 percent from 2012's total.

The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources says hunters killed 42 deer during the 2013 hunt, compared to 21 in 2012.

Mayor Bob Newell tells the Parkersburg News and Sentinel that the number of deer damage reports in the city has dropped since the hunt began in 2011.

The city implemented the hunt to reduce its deer population.

City officials are considering whether to expand the hunting areas.

The city's hunt opens in September and closes Dec. 31.
