SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Hunters killed more than 56,000 bucks during West Virginia's two-week firearm season. That's up slightly from the 2012 season.

Division of Natural Resources director Frank Jezioro said Friday that Jackson County led the state with 1,914 bucks killed. Ritchie County was second with 1,909, followed by Roane County with 1,878, Preston County with 1,753 and Lewis County with 1,685.

Jezioro says the number of bucks killed varied by region. The largest percentage increases were in the state's western counties, while kills decreased in mountain counties and in the Northern Panhandle.

The buck firearms season ran from Nov. 25 to Dec. 7.
