This is one of those times where I don’t want to say much before you watch the video. It’s 18 minutes long, and while I HIGHLY recommend you watch it in its entirety, I understand many of you won’t. And that’s okay. At least watch 1 minute at the beginning to learn some background, and then — if you must — fast-forward to the 5:45 mark.
And that’s all I’m saying for now. Watch the YouTube video. (Scroll below the video to read my final comments.)
Final thoughts: Insane, right? I’ve never seen anything like it. If you’re curious, the hunter, Zeb Cox, was using a pump-action Remington Model 760, and the buck field dressed at 165 pounds. He shot three times; did you see the second one?
In addition to the buck encounter, what I appreciated so much about this video is it shows just how different the techniques and terrain can be when pursuing whitetails in North America. Some deer hunters sit in expensive elevated box blinds with heaters and other creature comforts and target whitetails on food plots, or over bait. Others play the waiting game in hang-on portables, ladder stands or saddles. And some, like Zeb, cut a fresh buck track in snow and see where it leads. I loved the scenes where it was so steep and the snow so deep that Zeb jabbed his rifle buttstock into the snow to help pull himself forward.
Congrats, Zeb, on an outstanding deer hunt. Dragging the buck a couple miles off the mountain in the thick cover, with all the snow, was uber-impressive. And then you still had a couple miles to hike back to your vehicle. Well done, sir!
