If you’re relatively new to turkey hunting, or if you’ve been at it for many years but having only sporadic success, I highly recommend watching this 20-minute YouTube video. The host, who never appears on camera, simply explains how a 79-year-old hunter opened his eyes to what’s really happening in the spring turkey woods.
According to the host, that elderly hunter who acted as his mentor had been pursuing turkeys for 60 years. I haven’t been at it that long — about 35 years — but my experience has taught me that everything the mentor preached is true.
Today’s turkey hunter gets so caught up on owning a wide variety of top-dollar calls and spends countless hours practicing with them. Now, there’s nothing wrong with great calls and great calling skill. I wish I had the latter. But it’s more important to know what to say — and more importantly, what NOT to say — to kill birds.
Take the time to watch this video and listen carefully to the given advice. There are times when very little or no calling is needed. The key is understanding when and why. There are times when a lot of calling is needed. Again, the key is understanding when and why.
After you fully grasp what is happening in the spring turkey woods, your success will skyrocket.
Watch and learn.
