Collage act of generosity

This story might be my favorite of 2026.

Here are the facts: 27-year-old Will Robinson (above, left) of Meridianville, Alabama, had just won a Phoenix bass boat valued at $80,000 in the Lake Guntersville Big-Bass Splash for catching a largemouth weighing 8.48 pounds. And to make his day even better, his name was then called for the event’s Elimination Boat Drawing.

The Elimination Drawing bass boat was valued at $60,000. Robinson was one of only five people in the crowd whose name was drawn to take part in this contest. He already had won a bass boat, and now moments later he has a one-in-five chance to win a second one!

At that point, the structure of the contest is “last man standing.” In other words, if your name is drawn from a hat, you’re eliminated. You receive a fishing rod as a consolation prize, then leave the stage. Next, another name is drawn, so then that angler takes their seat, etc., until finally only one person — the winner —  is left standing.

As you’ll see, with five people on stage, it’s Chuck Bridgewater (80) standing on the far right of the stage who has his name called first, meaning he’s out of the running to win the boat. He’s supposed to take a fishing rod as a consolation prize and then leave the stage. But before he can do so, Robinson steps forward and insists on taking his place by being eliminated. Robinson says, “I’ll take the rod,” meaning Bridgewater can step back in line for his chance at the $60,000 boat.

Think about that: Robinson had never met Bridgewater, yet he decided to exit the stage so Bridgewater could now have a one-in-four chance at the boat.

The tournament emcee understands this selfless act and gives Robinson a handshake/hug before he leaves the stage. And you can see that Bridgewater is overwhelmed with the kind gesture (above, middle).

Finally, the contest was down to two men standing, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the crowd when Bridgewater was the last man standing, winning the $60,000 boat.

Congratulations to Robinson for winning the bass fishing event, but more importantly, congrats to him for winning the event we call life. Congrats, too, to Bridgwater on his boat!

P.S. Robinson won the Big-Bass Splash on Lake Guntersville by only 0.01 pounds; the second place bass weighed 8.47 pounds. When asked about his amazing day, Robinson said: “I didn’t do this to be in the spotlight, but felt led that this is what God would have me do. Winning by 0.01 isn’t luck or coincidence — that is God’s work and His will being done. Truly a blessed weekend, and I hope it encourages many.”
