First Look At The Howa Mini Action Rifle

Prominently displayed at the Legacy Sports International booth at the 2015 SHOT Show in Las Vegas is the new Howa Mini Action bolt action rifle. Short action bolts cycle almost 7 inches and weigh 13.1 ounces while long action bolts cycle close to 7.5 inches and weigh 15.2 ounces. The mini action on this new Howa rifle cycles just a hair over 6 inches and weighs only 10.2 ounces, 12 percent shorter than short action bolts. This makes the rifle not only quicker and easier to cycle due to the shorter bolt throw, it saves precious ounces, too.

The Howa Mini Actionis available with barrels in lightweight, standard, or heavy configurations. The lightweight and heavy barrels are 20 inches long, while the standard barrel is 22 inches. All three barrel styles are hammer forged and all models come with an HACT 2-stage trigger and 5-round synthetic detachable box magazine.

The Howa Mini Action rifle is currently available in .204 and .223, but additional calibers are coming soon. It is available in black, OD green, or Kryptek Highlander camouflage and all models include sling swivel studs.

The Howa Mini Action can be purchased as rifle only or with the new Nikko Sterling Panamax riflescope in 3-9x40. These Panamax scopes have a wide angle field of view, .25-inch click turrets, a fast-focus eyepiece, and dual red/green illuminated half-mil dot reticles. The reticles make targeting easy from dawn until dusk.

MSRPs vary depending upon barrel, camo, and whether or not it includes the Panamax scope. A standard barrel rifle in black or green has an MSRP of $608, while the lightweight model is $652 and the heavy barrel model is $681. A standard rifle in Highlander camouflage has an MSRP of $681 while the lightweight Highlander runs $724 and the heavy barrel camo model is priced at $753.
