Last July I wrote a story for this website called, “Magnet Outdoors — A New Food Plot Company With a Legendary Leadership Team.” Click here to check it out.

During late-summer and fall 2025 I field tested three of the company’s offerings on a few small food plots in western Wisconsin. On July 26 my family and I planted Founder’s Blend North and Brassica Binge North, then on August 8 we planted Simply Scatter. Let me briefly touch on what’s in each bag.

Founder’s Blend North is a premium perennial blend consisting mostly of five varieties of clover with a smaller percentage of chicory. The “North” in the name means it’s designed for northern soils and climate, and when cared for properly (meaning decent control of weeds) the blend should last up to 3-5 years from a single planting. FYI: Deer hunters in southern climates can purchase the region-specific Founder’s Blend South.

We didn’t plant Founder’s Blend North by itself in any one field; instead, we added it to the food plots planted with the annuals Brassica Binge North and Simply Scatter. The reason is we wanted these fields to have clover and chicory growing right away the following spring.

Brassica Binge North is an annual blend of kale, rape and turnips. It offers attractive leafy-green tops as well as underground tubers, which will keep deer visiting a food plot after the tops have been eaten. In my experience, it’s tough to beat a brassica field after the snow flies and the ground freezes.

Simply Scatter is advertised as an offering with “minimal ground prep required,” but we went ahead and prepped our fields for it just like we did for the other two products in our field test. This blend contains rape (two varieties), radish, annual clovers (three varieties) and ryegrass. Because this blend needs a minimum of only 3-4 hours of sunlight per day to grow, we chose to plant it in a .25-acre plot that’s surrounded by tall trees.

A Challenging Fall Growing Season

Our hunting group planted half of our food plots on July 26 and the remainder of August 8. We were blessed with rain shortly after our first planting date, and then additionally blessed with timely rains during the first three weeks of August.

Planting and maintaining food plots can be stressful — I don’t know how crop farmers keep their sanity when everything depends on the weather. I mention this because just when I was optimistic that our hunting group would have outstanding food plots for the 2025 deer season, Mother Nature decided to turn off the spigot.

Our area in western Wisconsin didn’t receive any rain during the last week of August, and essentially none in September and early October. This meant our food plots jumped off to a great start but then hit a wall. I’ll do the math for you: no moisture = no substantial additional plant growth. Dang!

Check out the photos and accompanying captions below to learn the results of our Magnet Outdoors field test. As you’ll see, our plots didn’t produce significant tonnage due to no rain for nine straight weeks. Many of the forages in Brassica Binge North and Simply Scatter would have grown to at least knee high with decent moisture, but instead they stalled at about 8 inches. Again . . . dang!

You can't see evidence of success with the perennial clover Founder's Blend North in these photos, but I can tell you it got off to a decent start in all of our plots. I look forward to seeing its continued growth in spring 2026.

Helpful Information and Advice

Now that you've looked at the pics and captions from my field test, I want to mention I was supremely impressed by the amount of helpful information provided on the back of the Magnet Outdoors seed bags. Each bag contains a detailed planting guide and instructions, everything from where to plant and recommended dates to fertilizer, ground prep and planting tips. The company’s website is outstanding, too; it’s full of great how-to information.

I’ll certainly be planting Magnet Outdoors products in the future. And as I do every food plot season, I’ll be praying for rain.

P.S. Below I’ve included one of the many videos the guys at Magnet Outdoors feature on their website. This particular one is about the company’s Brassica Binge regional offerings, and you’ll see how these blends will put on serious tonnage with timely rains.
