Nevada is widely considered to be the driest state in the United States. It is made up of mostly desert and semi-arid climate regions, and, with the exception of the Las Vegas Valley, the average summer diurnal temperature range approaches 40 °F (22 °C) in many areas across the state. While winters in the north are long and fairly cold, the winter season in the southern region tends to be short and mild. Most parts of Nevada experience very little precipitation during the year. The average annual rainfall per year is about 7 inches (18 cm).
