Reader Submit: Madison River

Reader Michael Shepard submitted these photos of his favorite duck spot — Freezeout Reservoir near Choteau, Mont. He says he spends anywhere from seven to 10 days consecutively here each season. The Lab in the pictures is his dog Madison Montana; Maddie for short. She’s named after the Madison River and has made any number of 100- to 150-yard retrieves at this spot.

Says Michael, “The dog makes the outing, and she was trained by me so all her faults are mine too! She is only 5, so we have a bunch of years to go.”

Michael adds that he’s “old-school” and only uses Browning A-5s, some of which date back to as early as the 1930s.
