Deer hunters know all to well the perils overpopulation can cause.

Munching whitetails ruin many suburban landscapes. Some topple fences, destroy vegetation, and even punch holes in pool tarps with their hooves.

In the grand scheme of things these are just minor inconveniences.  The real damage occurs on America’s roadways. Whether sportsmen hunt for food or pleasure, the bottom line is we need to cull the herd in many locations across the country.

A deer and a moving vehicle do not make good dance partners. Sometimes a collision simply results in a new bumper or scratched hood. But, often they end with injuries and sometimes fatalities.

If you have made it this far in life without slamming into a whitetail consider yourself lucky. For those of us that have either collided with or had near misses, I can assure you it is not an event we hope to relive.

Deer are easily spooked and many times they do things we would never imagine.

Take this example of a family traveling at 70 mph on an Illinois freeway when a doe suddenly jumps off an overpass and crashes below into their windshield and front seat.
