ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (AP) — Leaders in a western Illinois community have signed off on a trial deer hunting season to cut down on the community's growing deer population.

Rock Island aldermen voted 5-2 Monday to approve the bow-hunting program within city limits.

Hunters will be able to harvest deer in eight designated areas starting in December.

They'll have until Nov. 25 to submit applications to participate.

The bow-and-arrow deer-hunting season will run until Jan. 19.

The aldermen who voted against the hunt said they're worried about safety.
