Poachers Strike Texas Town Where Deer Roam Free

PORT MANSFIELD, Texas (AP) — The tiny fishing village of Port Mansfield is offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of a bow-and-arrow toting deer poacher.

The Valley Morning Star reports the approximately 450 deer who roam the city 40 miles north of Harlingen are a tourist attraction.

Texas Fish and Wildlife Service game warden Oscar Castañeda says residents' feeding of the deer has made them easy targets. One buck was discovered dead and three more were found injured from arrows in recent months.

He followed the dead buck's blood trail to a resident's mobile home park but could not find the arrow.

The death represents the first confirmed kill by a poacher since January 2013, when a hunter used a 30.06-caliber rifle to shoot a 12-point buck.
