AMES, Iowa (AP) — State officials say no deer killed in a special state-sanctioned hunt in northeast Iowa have tested positive for chronic wasting disease.
The Mason City Globe Gazette reports that the hunt in Allamakee County is part of the state's efforts to track the fatal neurological deer disease. About 400 people were issued permits to participate in the hunt, now in its second week.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources said Friday that none of the 64 samples tested so far have been positive for the disease.
Samples are tested at the National Veterinary Services Lab in Ames.
Wildlife officials hope to test 200 samples from a 30-square-mile area. That's near where four deer that tested positive for the disease were killed during the 2013 and 2014 hunting seasons.
