SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources says a 25-year-old hunter from Easley has bagged a record 600-pound black bear.

The Herald Journal of Spartanburg reported that Heath Smith says he took one shot from 170 yards away Monday. Smith says he couldn't tell how large the bear was, but he knew it was well over 100 pounds.

Smith said he found the bear in the woods near Landrum.

DNR officers weighed the bear and found it was 609 pounds, a state record. The previous record was 594 pounds.

Bear hunting is allowed in some parts of the state to help control the bear population.
