In the 1-minute Facebook video below, a Quebec man slowly approaches a rutting bull moose — a big one! The guy is dressed in a black shirt, bluejeans and a camo hat; no gloves, no facemask. The cover is relatively open, with scattered pines.
To mimic a challenger, the man slowly approaches the bull; the black shirt no doubt helps him look like another moose. Hunting guides often use a moose shoulder bone (scapula) to rake brush to call a bull out of thick cover; this is the white object you see in the man’s left hand. In his right is a piece of wood cut out to look like a moose antler. It can also be used to rake brush and trees to sound like a rutting bull.

Here, the man raises the scapula, and especially the wood cutout, above his shoulders and to the side to mimic the antlers of a moose. Notice how the man slowly rocks back and forth as he approaches the bull; this is to look like a bull that is showing off its antlers to an opponent.
Is this dangerous? Certainly. But it’s clear to me this guy knows a lot about moose behavior; as I like to say, this isn’t his first rodeo. He’s careful to keep at least one pine tree between himself and the bull — that is, until he finally lunges forward to smack the fake antler on the moose’s real one. He just couldn’t resist!
I like the joyous celebration at the end, too. He’s like a 10-year-old who just scored his first touchdown!
FYI: I don’t speak French, so I can’t understand 99 percent of the many comments posted on Pierre Paquet’s Facebook page. I don’t know if this is Pierre in the video, if he filmed a buddy on his phone, if the guys were hunting or simply scouting/hiking, etc. I can’t imagine they were hunting for moose and had an unfilled bull tag, because this is a massive moose, especially for Quebec. There’s no way, in my opinion, that a Quebec hunter would pass on this bull.
