With a passion for pursuing big bulls in the Rocky Mountains, it only took Nose Jammer Founder and President John Redmond 25 years to stop and smell the roses.

Or in his particular case, stop and smell the ponderosa pines.

"A buddy and I had just blown a setup on a nice bull elk," Redmond recalled. "We were just sitting there in the mountains talking about what had gone wrong. While we were sitting there, I noticed my friend was peeling the bark off a ponderosa pine. He began to tell me how years ago when he was in Boy Scouts they used to peel the bark on these particular trees because they had a very sweet smell. Now in 25 years of tromping around the backcountry, I never had a reason to stop and smell ponderosa pine bark, but I'm glad I finally did. When I smelled the bark it had a sweet smell, so I just thought it was a hint of maple syrup or something like that, but it captured my curiosity and I started to do some research. I discovered what I had smelled was Vanillin, which is a wood byproduct that is emitted from trees, shrubs, and grasses. Truthfully, that's how the ball started to roll. I continued to research and found out that not only do trees, shrubs, and grasses emit aromatic compounds into the environment, but that herbivores eat this foliage and are constantly inhaling these compounds. What I decided to do was take these types of compounds and create the Nose Jammer, and the Jammer delivers concentrated levels of these compounds to overwhelm an animal's sense of smell.

"We launched the company in 2011, and I've been shocked at how we've grown," Redmond continued. "Here's the deal; the wind is the only deciding factor between whether you're going to harvest an animal or not. You can have the best hunter in the world or the worst hunter in the world on a quality animal and if the wind swirls, it doesn't matter, the hunt is over. As far as new-for-2014 products, Redmond noted that he plans to remain focused on the products that he has in circulation right now.

"We have enough SKUs right now, and I don't want my SKUs to outrun my awareness," Redmond explained. "That being said, we do have some dynamic products in the works for 2015 and beyond. All of these awesome products get rid of the smells that alarm game and replace them with compounds that we know game are conditioned to smelling.
