BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A hunter who went missing last week in the Boise County wilderness has been found and says he survived by eating insects and sleeping with rats.

KTVB-TV reports that 59-year-old Arlen Dowdy, of Eagle, was hunting in the Mores Creek Summit area last Tuesday when he became separated from his father-in-law. He soon found himself alone in the woods with no idea where he was.

He was found Thursday and says he went into survival mode when he was stranded. He says he ate insects and raw meat from a quail he shot. He spent his two nights in the woods in an abandoned mine shaft, sharing a piece of abandoned carpet with pack rats.

The Navy veteran was treated at a Boise hospital, but released after about an hour.
