While suppressors have many attributes that make them a great accessory for hunting of all sorts, first and foremost, they guard against hearing loss. Guns are loud, OK? There’s no getting around it. Shooting guns and shooting them often without taking precautions will contribute to auditory decline — along with listening to loud music, frequenting loud bars and restaurants, mowing the lawn, operating power tools, and such. One way to prevent this, of course, is to religiously wear hearing protection every time you pick up a gun — uber important at the range because of the high-volume shooting. But hearing protection can be cumbersome in some situations, such as spot-and-stalk hunting or when waiting in ambush in a blind. Arguably, there’s a better way, and that’s to accessorize your favorite firearms with a suppressor. Note: When at the range or any other high volume shooting situation, it’s a good practice to wear hearing protection even when shooting a suppressed gun to further reduce the sound signature. There are compelling reasons why suppressors make good sense when hunting. The obvious benefit is that you don’t need to wear ear plugs. There are so many circumstances when you have ’em in when you don’t need ’em and don’t have ’em in when you need ’em. And it’s not just your ears, but making sure you’re protecting the ears of those around you as well. And the reduced sound signature also means you’re less likely to alarm animals, which can mean getting a second shot at an unspooked animal, if needed. Another benefit is recoil reduction — which is similar to using a muzzle brake (without the loud report). This means hunters can typically use a higher caliber than they otherwise would. A lot of people “caliber down” because of recoil, but with a suppressor they can use the caliber they want. Here are eight models that will help you protect your hearing while on the hunt for predators.
