Why I’m Buying a Tacklebox — for Bowhunting

After 40 years of carrying my bowhunting shooting accessories in a 1-gallon Ziploc, I’m making a summer-and-beyond resolution to finally get organized.

Why I’m Buying a Tacklebox — for Bowhunting

As an avid fisherman, I own a couple boats, about 20 rod-and-reel combos, and more tackleboxes than I can count on all my fingers and toes. That said, I’m buying another tacklebox, but this one won’t be loaded with the hottest bass lures. Instead, I’ll fill it with broadheads, practice points, Allen wrenches and other bowhunting-related tools and gear.

I’m embarrassed to admit I’ve been keeping my bowhunting shooting accessories in a 1-gallon Ziploc bag, and I don’t mean for just a year or two. Try 40 years.

Sure, a Ziploc works. Truth be told, I must be on bag No. 30-something by now. I can see what’s inside the bag, but it doesn’t help in storing or transporting broadheads that have been removed from their original packaging. In addition, finding something I need in the Ziploc is similar to stuffing my hand in a kids’ cereal box and digging for the prize. Messy and ineffective.

Specifically, I’m ordering a MTM Magnum Broadhead Box. Don’t let the word “magnum” fool you, however. Compared to most fishing tackleboxes, this one is small, measuring only 11.7x5x4 inches. That said, it will hold close to two dozen fixed-blade broadheads in the provided foam inserts. I’ll carry my mechanical heads and practice points in the smaller interior box. Under the interior box is space for Allen wrenches and other tools.

I like two other things about this box: It’s made in the USA, and the price is less than $20.

In the past, I’ve had trouble keeping tabs on where I stuffed the Ziploc containing my shooting accessories. My plan going forward is to store the Broadhead Box in one of two places: at home on my workbench, or in my pickup under the back seat. Even though the box is camo, I shouldn’t have trouble finding it.
