COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Officials say hunters in Ohio checked more than 6,600 antlerless white-tailed deer during the state's muzzleloader season last weekend.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources says 6,613 deer were checked during the two-day season from Oct. 11-12. That's an 18 percent increase from last year's first-ever antlerless muzzleloader season in Ohio, when hunters checked about 5,600 deer.

Muzzleloaders are traditional hunting weapons that emphasize accuracy and the value of the first shot.

Ashtabula County reported the most checked deer during this year's season with 228.

Archery hunters checked an additional 1,313 deer last weekend. Archery season remains open through Feb. 1
