LOXAHATCHEE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE, Fla. (AP) — Some animal rights advocates are protesting the allowing of alligator hunting in a South Florida wildlife refuge.
The Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge is opening its first-ever alligator hunting season to control the reptile's population.
Eleven hunters, randomly selected from more than 1,000 applicants, are being allowed to take two alligators each from the roughly 150,000-acre swamp and forest.
The Palm Beach Post reports some representatives from the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida are planning protests, saying “hunting is against the very sense of the term ‘refuge.’”
